Brief Updates from Iringa Regional Hospital

FRIENDSHIP AND COLLABORATION

Iringa regional Hospital (IRH) under the collaboration with Vicenza in capacity building to staff at IRH in Paediatrics and Obtetric and Gynaecology. IRH has established a Link with KCMC Hospital in Moshi Kilimanjaro region.

On 29th and 30th April 2010 a team from KCMC held a meeting with IRH management team to explore training needs assessment.

IRH employs an Occupational Therapist

This is a step ahead to fulfill one of the requirements to make the hospital really a regional referral Hospital.

Among his duties the most important will be to work with individuals, families, groups and communities to facilitate health and well-being through engagement or re-engagement in occupation.


Currently the Hospital has:

  • 1 general surgeon
  • 1 orthopedic surgeon
  • 1 Gynecologist
  • 1 Ophthalmologist
  • 2 Public Health specialists
  • 1 physiotherapist
  • and looking forward to get a physician and a pediatrician in the near future.

Child care ward construction update

Progress on the construction of the maternal Newborn and Child care ward at Iringa Regional Hospital.This in total goes hand in hand with the 4th  and 5th  millennium development goals. The new Labour ward is expected to finish in May 2010. END

An abnormal child is born


A woman aged 20 delivered an abnormal child weighing 3.5 kg on 13th April 2010. The baby died 2 min post delivery. Together with other abnormalities the baby had no communication through the nose and mouth and no mandible. It was the first delivery to her.

Male Circumcision activities established

Iringa regional hospital under the support of JHPIEGO has established Male circumcision activities as a strategy of minimizing transmission of HIV among the community.

Todate 2 trainning sessions have been completed and a total of  -----clients have been attended so far. The response is very positive. The future plan is to make this Hospital as a center of excellence regarding male circumcision in the country.

 

Abnormal Child delivered

Recently Iringa Regional Hospital reported a delivery of an abnormal child with abnormality on the chest and posterior left hand extending to the chest the child is alive.

 

Hospital Expansion Underway

Expansion of IRH –Under the cooperaton with VICHENZA-ITALY, a plan to expand the working environment has already started. Construction of the new building includes the new paediatric ward, matrnity ward and postnatel wards, the motive goes hand in hand with the strategy to make The hospital a real REGIONAL REFERRAL HOSPITAL

US Mission Director visits Iringa Regional Hospital

The US. Mission Director Visited Iringa Regional Hospital on 2nd June 2009. The main aim of the visit was to see the progress of activities supported by the US Government.

The Director was able to see activities done at different departments, all of these were those related to Primary and Secondary prevention of HIV infection and AIDS.(Prevention of Mother to child Transmission of HIV(PMTCT), Provider Initiated  Testing and Counseling,(PITC) & Care and Treatment.(CTC).

Rape case are on the increase

Iringa Regional Hospital has noted the increase of cases of rape since last year. To our surprise the activities goes contrary to the efforts done to combat the spread of HIV as well as an unwanted pregnancies. The youngest rape case was 2Years and Six Months

Modern incinerator completed

news

Since the completion of a modern incinerator, now the Hospital can effectively implement fully management of medical waste specifically disposal of medical waste this was made possible following the completion of construction of a new incinerator at the Hospital.


The cost of the Modern Incinerator was around 54 million Tanzanian shillings and the most important thing is that the incinerator is environmental friendly since smoke had to pass through water before it comes out to the atmosphere.

DELIVERY EVENTS 2008

Two mothers gave birth to 6 babies, 3 babies each.


1.The first one was gravida 1 para 0 that means it was HER FIRST DELIVERY. On 24.01.2008 two females (weight 2.3 kg and 2.1 kg) one male (weight 1.5kg) at home.She was delivered by Operation. Photo here>>>

2.The second was gravida 5 para 4. (FIFTH DELIVERY) with three babies alive, one died. On 1st Feb 2008 One female (2.4 kg) two boys (2.6 and 1.6). Normal delivery (SVD) Photo here>>>

HIV/AIDS Testing Day successful in Iringa


The National HIV/AIDS testing days were introduced by the government to sensitize the public as well as get close to accurate status of the AIDS epidemic.

In Iringa, the event was led by the Regional commissioner and all leading Government and Civil society leaders who urged the population to treat the AIDS scurge with th seriousness it deserves.

Iringa region unfortunately leads the nation in HIV/AIDS prevalence rates but initiatives are being undertaken to ensure that the rates are contained.
